It just does not make sense

September 26, 2016 By Paul Hamlett 4 Comments

What’s different about the 2016 proposal and the last one in 2012.

  •   Community concerns regarding safety risks the same
  •   Negative impact on tourism opportunities for the region the same
  •   Negative impact on the existing users the same
  •   Adverse impact on the habits and accessibility to all fauna the same
  •   Lack of a management plan for Snake Island the same
  •   No benefit to the local community the same

  • Population of hog deer was estimated at between 500 -1000 now 500
  •  Proposed period of the balloted hunting increased from two months (June -July) to four months (Feb – May) ie the peak fishing/ tourist season
  • Number of hunters increased from 24 (4 x groups of 6) to 64 (8 x groups of 8)
  • Maximum number of hog deer to be taken increased from 48 to 128

Last time the proposal was rejected and this time it has been approved without any community consultation.

no we don’t shoot anything on the island. We make new friends every year by escorting tourists over there and showing them the peaceful sanctuary that the island is. Tourists come back every year and bring their children with them to experience the serenity. The deer are part of the experience. The children love it when we go antler hunting and find antlers on the ground. No need to shoot the deer. At night time the deer come to camp for a visit as they are not fearful of us. A once in a life time experience. And now I know what once in a lifetime means. Make the most of it cos it mightn’t be there tomorrow. Thanks to our legal and illegal hunters.

Seriously!!? You think the cattlemen shoot the deer? When they are trying to stop it? That is ridiculous! Especially when firearms are not allowed to be carried over there!
What a joke of a comment to make :/

Hunters please leave our beautiful Snake Island alone. It is there for everyone to enjoy, horse riders, bush walkers, kayaker s, fisherman stopping with their family’s for a walk around the lovely beach, school kids and even for all you hunters but just without a gun in your hand. Try and enjoy taking a cammera and take shots of the deer that way instead. My son is a hunter and loves taking pictures of the deer there. He has plenty of opertunities shooting deer else where and thinks the island should be left alone.
